Description
An account of the resource
Following the discovery of gold at Sutter’s Mill in California in 1848, a massive influx of people migrated to the western United States in search of their own fortune. During the second half of the nineteenth century and continuing well into the twentieth, mining enterprises appeared all throughout the western half of the country, stretching from Alaska down to New Mexico and Arizona, from South Dakota to California. Gold, of course, was not the only valuable deposit sought by the waves of miners and prospectors. A massive silver deposit, known as the Comstock Lode, was discovered in Nevada in 1859 and spurred further mining frenzy. In states like Arizona, Montana, and New Mexico, copper mining became a major industry in the 1860s and 1870s.
The Samuel W. Dougan Collection, primarily consisting of stock certificates, illustrates the abundance of mining companies that were incorporated and operated throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries in the western United States. The majority of these certificates were issued between 1850 and the early 1930s. During the various mining booms, stock trading and speculation in American mining operations reached international proportions. The worth of these artistically detailed pieces of paper could shift dramatically at a moment’s notice, and dishonest business practices were far from uncommon. Receipts, checks, and bank deposit slips offer evidence of the development of various mining communities, many of which are now historic districts and ghost towns. The 450 items in this collection are presented by the Ripon College Archives for personal use, scholarly or teaching purposes, or other “fair use” purposes as defined by U.S. Copyright Law. The collection was donated to the Ripon College Archives in 2019 by Samuel W. Dougan, Class of 1948.
